History

Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics was established on March 3rd, 1983 as  11th Faculty of Istanbul Technical University. The Faculty consists of three departments: Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, and Meteorological Engineering. Aeronautical Engineering Department was first established as a branch of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty in 1941, and then in 1944 became a department of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty. Meteorological Engineering Department was first established in 1953 within the Faculty of Electricity. In 1971, the department was transferred to the Faculty of Basic Sciences, in 1982 to the Mining Faculty, and in 1983 to the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Astronautical Engineering Department was first established in 1983 together with the faculty and started accepting undergraduate students in 1986.
