Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering is a graduate program under the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and provides graduate and doctoral education. It is a multidisciplinary program in the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The program aims to educate students with research and development skills in the fields of aerodynamics, propulsion, structure and material, flight and orbital dynamics, and control of aircraft and space vehicles. A total of 37 faculty members work in the program.

The history of the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering goes back to the opening of the Aviation and Aerospace EAP (Engineering and Architecture Postgraduate) program in 1976 in the first years of a four-year education at our university. In those years, the program was carried out by the faculty members of the Aeronautics Department, which is a part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In 1982, with the establishment of the Institute of Science Engineering and Technology, and the transfer of the Astronautics Department to the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the program was transformed into the Aeronautical Engineering program under the same institute. Meanwhile, a Space Technology Program had been opened by the academic staff of the Space Technology Engineering Department. In the following years, the program took the name of the Space Engineering Program. In 2003, these two programs were combined, and the Interdisciplinary Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering and master's and doctoral programs under the same name have been opened under this department.

During globalization, the need for research and production in the fields of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering is gradually increasing. This situation brings with it the need for experts who have received graduate education and on current research issues in addition to an undergraduate level study. Since the technological developments in the aviation and aerospace industry are complementary to each other, the aim is to meet this requirement by carrying out the Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering educations at the same time in Turkey, similar to many other countries. For this reason, Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering Programs have been restructured under the name of the Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Graduate Program, in a way that it is carried out in the coordination of the two departments. While designing the program, the goal was to complete the education with the courses offered by the faculty members of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics and experts from other universities, considering the student quotas and the number of faculty members.
